What Is Tool And Die Engineering?

Engineering is a universal concept that can be applied to any field of production. Engineering basically comprises of scheming with specifics to create tangible maneuvers from paper plans to facilitate machinery or to be employed individually as a standalone product in manufacturing and production. Tool and die engineering is the field of planning and producing tools such as press tools, dies, cutting tools, molds and so on that create specific products on raw materials like sheet metal parts. The modified sheet metal parts are sequestered for use in the function of high-end machinery components.
Types of tools/dies:
  1. Dies:

The dies hold a simple construction with sheet metal tools sandwiched between upper and lower jaw of the tool. Upon pressure the die cuts or forges into the sheet imprinting or re-shaping according to its shape or design. Dies are classified as compound or combination dies where more than one operation such as cutting, drawing or flexing. The products manufactured from die casting hold place in major scale industries like automobiles, energy power plant to cellular phone covers.

2.              Drilling tools:

The drilling tools are employed to form holes with less circumference when compared to dies which can puncture into sheet metal parts with bigger holes with pressure. The pressure applied in drilling tools is twice that can be obtained cutting dies, which serve its purpose especially in communication and electronics devices. Industries like former, orifices are expected to smaller to used as better appendages for assembling.

3.              Turning tools:

Turning tools proves its dexterity in scrapping, removal or fine tuning of metal parts. The finely tuned sheet metal parts are then used in petrochemical industries and power plants. Turning tools are essential to create specific type of dies.

4.              Rotatory mills:
Mills serve as finishing touch tools to products post manufacturing to further enhance its capability or sleekness. The general setup would involve roller conveyers into which the sheet metal parts are inserted to ensure its size and surface uniformity meet the client’s requirements.

5.              Molds:

The molding tools produce parts with specific shape and size to fit the manufacturing of client standard products. There are various molds based on the method used for manufacturing. Compression molding is used to produce car parts by pouring molten metal part into molds and compress the molten metal with molds of specific design to give the metal part a desired shape. Rotational molds are used in the manufacture of huge storage tanks used in reactors and biochemical industries for producing products in huge volumes.

             Conclusion:

The brief discussion has included the major categories of tools and dies used in manufacturing but there are several sub-classifications from the main category of tools. The types of tools has highlighted the significance of tool and die engineering to meet different manufacturing requirements.
