Types of die for press tool component

A die is a structure that is used in the production process to shape the metal as per the requirements in a press. The die is similar to mold as it is made as per the product design and the requirements. It is used in the production of products like paper clips and complicated components of heavy machinery.

There are various types of dye for press tool equipment. Some of these are:

  • Cutting dies: These are special dies that are used specifically to cut metal. It uses force and shearing action to either stretch the metal or cut it completely.
  • Forming dies: These dies are used specifically to give a certain shape to the metal. This die doesn't allow for any wastage of the material.
  • Simple dies: The simple dies are used when only one operation is required to be performed in one single press tools. It can be used to perform specific tasks such as cutting or forming.
  • Compound dies: The compound dies are dies that are used to perform two or more operations simultaneously. The most common operation performed using the compound dies is the cutting.
  • Combination dies: This die is also used to perform two or more operations simultaneously in one press. The difference between a compound and combination die is that in a combination die, operations like bending and cutting of metals one as after the other.
  • Progressive die: In a progressive die, the die follows one operation after the other in the same press step. After each operation, the metal is transferred to the next station if the same die. After each press, the metal is converted to the final product.
  • Transfer dies: These dies are similar to the progressive die, but the differentiating factor is that in this the cut metal is transferred mechanically.
  • Multiple dies: This is a special type of simple die for two simple dies that are clubbed together to get two finished products simultaneously.
These are some of the basic types of dies used in the press tool for performing various operations on the metal.
